An old friend of mine took one look at this painting and said; “Jim, it is clearly about longing.” In an instant, without ever having thought about this at all before, I knew he was correct. That is, I suppose what explains that feeling in the pit of my stomach, maybe in the deepest part of my being when I go out at night staring into the universe. I wonder how far (or near) the most distant object can be? Is there someone out there also looking back at us? I would not claim to be a religious person. I do see the logic of the mathematics and likelihood of life somewhere else. I never realized, however, that what I was also expressing with art was my own personal existential crisis. Seems obvious now.
